GMAC

Divisions of auto manufacturers are not known as being great eco-stewards, but GMAC is an exception. Using state-of-the-art technology GMAC takes a huge leap ahead of other insurers by being the largest pay-as-you-drive insurers thanks to its partnership with OnStar.

Drivers of GM automobiles have one more reason to love their OnStar pay-as-you-drive option. Pay-as-you-drive (PAYD) is a hot topic in many state legislatures today. Law makers want to require make sure their constituency has the option available to them. However, consumers have few options today. By partnering with its sister company, GMAC is one of the first to actually offer the product. PAYD rewards drivers with premium discounts of up to 54% by motoring less than average. The company says that the discount program has encouraged 10,000 policy holders to give it a try.

So how does it work? Well GMAC assumes that the average driver puts 15,000 miles on his car each year. Using a GM car's installed OnStar device, GMAC gets a regular e-mail from OnStar telling how many miles the client has driven. If you drive less than the allotted 15,000 miles you get discounts based on a tier system.
